Welcome to The Grey Hound
The Grey Hound is a super Grade II listed building, which retains its original beams and architecture, but has been given a new lease of life by owners Andrea and Ian Bentall and their team.
The Grey Hound sadly stood empty for several years before Andrea and Ian bought it and undertook large scale refurbishment and rebuilding works to bring this wonderful Grade II listed building back to life and to give it the real WOW factor. With hints and tones of copper, burgundy, black and pale green it is a venue with energy and style – it has a very high quality finish including solid oak doors as well as slate and wooden floors - stunning! Easy leather chairs from Italy and a carpeted ‘snug’ area alongside bench and bar seating offer the espresso drinker and the real ale aficionado equal degrees of comfort and belonging.
There is also a splendid vaulted private dining area known as 'Conviviale' that is perfect for groups of up to 20 diners. Our guests are able to see our chefs 'throw' (known as Flairing) the pizza dough before cooking the pizzas in the wood fired clay pizza oven, that we especially imported from Italy. The pizza oven allows for wonderful home baked breads, slow roasted meats and of course pizza for both eating in and collection for home dining. (You know for those nights that frankly it is just way too much effort to leave your own front room and TV!)
The outside rear patio is quite a suntrap in the English sunshine. There is also outside seating to the front of the pub. The Grey Hound also has plenty of parking including designated disabled parking (and facilities).
The name of The Grey Hound was originally The Three Greyhounds, thought to be from either the greyhounds on the Dowse family coat of arms or possibly from the insignia of the Buck hold forest foresters. It was colloquially known as ‘The Dog’. The original building dating from the 17th century was thatched and with a cottage attached. Major alterations were made about 1820 when it became a hotel and was owned by the Normancourt estate until it was sold to Strongs and later to Marstons. It was in this public house that the famous Greyhound Pumpkin Club was founded in 1967. Members broke the British record several times until in 1984 it reached an amazing 444lbs (202kg)!
The Grey Hound is in the heart of the thriving community of Broughton, which has over 25 very active societies and groups catering for all ages and interests. It has its own school, doctors surgery, village shop & post office, community bus, village hall and village policeman. Broughton was one of the first to receive designated conservation status and is twinned with Soave in France.
We believe The Grey Hound is a local amenity first and foremost but we always look forward to meeting new people to the area – including walkers, cyclists, dogs and kiddies (please note all dogs must be on a lead at all times and kids, I am afraid, there are no swings/slides etc – but who needs that when you have mighty fine pizza to eat!). We hope you will enjoy your visit to The Grey Hound as much as we all enjoy working here - see you soon!
Did you know that the same owners have the The Mill Arms at Dunbridge, near Romsey which is a mere 10 minute drive away and that is offers 6 en suite bedrooms and is very close to the National Trust property Mottisfont Abbey with its superb gardens. The Mill Arms also boasts a function room for 100+, a two lane traditional skittle alley and large landscaped gardens.
